Accelerating treatments and cures by fostering communication, cooperation and collaborations among researchers and institutions.

CANCollaborate is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to fostering communication, cooperation and collaborations among researchers and institutions with the goal of accelerating treatments and cures for diseases.

While we began with a focus on rare cancers, our efforts are now relevant to all areas of research.

Our Approach

Developing a Collaborative Model

CANCollaborate aims to develop and optimize a collaborative model that brings together disruptive thinkers, leading researchers and innovators. This model is designed to consolidate expertise, facilitate data and model sharing - ensuring a more comprehensive approach to research.

Disrupting the Financial Traditions

Despite significant scientific breakthroughs, too few discoveries are translated into treatments. Many investors, private and public withhold funding due to much risk and uncertainty. We hope to create new business models and financing structures that can reduce risks and provide greater rewards.

A Vision for the Future

By pioneering such collaborations, CANCollaborate is addressing the immediate challenges of rare cancers and also laying the groundwork for a brighter future in all diseases.

Our beginnings

Steve Wallman, a lawyer, finance expert, entrepreneur, and former commissioner of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, had no personal connection to cancer or healthcare. That is until his wife, Kathy, a brilliant lawyer and writer—who seemed completely healthy—was diagnosed with stage 4 appendiceal cancer following a routine physical exam.

Working with Professor Andrew W. Lo from Laboratory for Financial Engineering, MIT and Jane Wilkinson from the MIT Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, they gathered experts in cancer research, rare disease research, regulatory, government policy, and finance policy for a 2 day workshop in April 2023. A spark was ignited and a shared commitment to solve the challenges of appendiceal and other rare cancer was born. CANCollaborate was created in September 2023.
